This is an odd title for a blog topic, but it was the most fascinating word of thought as we wrapped up week 6 of our FastTrac course. The actual title for the chapter was Reaching the Market, and we discussed some aspects of marketing promotions such as giving away your product or service by asking people to share (buy 2 for the price of 1), but the speaker for the night really wowed me on the topic of Junk. The speaker for the night, Mitch Smith, gave us a notable list of books to read: The Art of the Start, Strength Finders, Serve to Lead, and his book -Junk. It can be purchased on his website: Mitch D. Smith
So what is Junk about. It's about taking out the unnecessaries in your life. Do you need to be serving on several boards? Do you need to own two or three businesses? Do you need to be on several committees at church? What ever you are doing, make sure it's for their need and not your own. Work, Family, and Faith are 3 pivotal aspects of life. Achieve your potential by taking the junk out of your life so that clutter won't impede on a fulfilling life. Other insights by Mr. Smith was to be passionate for what you do and to stay focus. You should also do business with people you like. And finally, educate yourself and educate others.
So back to reaching the market. When sending out promotional information, think about why your customers and clients need you. Don't concentrate on what we do. There is a difference. Think about it from the customer's perspective, and market your information around those thoughts. Know the medium of your audience. Do they prefer text, email, or mail? Use social media- Link In, Twitter, Facebook, and Podcast. Offer discounts, coupons, and freebies.
So when are you going to start getting the Junk out of your life? For We Connected Productions, LLC it starts May 1st. We will focus on 3 aspects of our business: Educational workshops; Producer-for-hire; and Producing/writing/directing our own film/TV projects. We'll also continue to take time to commit to one aspect in our church ministry leadership positions. For Rhonda it's the Adult Ministry and for myself the Youth. We can't be on every committee. In family, we will be having our family reunions in July. We will take the time to embrace our family, and not tied down to the computer all the time. For many, I only see every two years, and I want it to be time well spent.
And how do we reach the market? We will likely use discounted rates for the workshops if you sign-up in advance or with a friend/filmmaker; women and youth will be our likely target group; and fliers and newsletters will be our medium of choice, followed by a more active social media presence.
Next week we're discussing how we go about attracting investors. Very timely considering we have worked on a number of recent projects that have been pushed back because of inadequate funding. Its one of the hardest jobs as a Producer. Yet, very rewarding once your passion is materialized. Show me the money!!
