Yo, I'm On The Making Movies Train

Ava DuVernay as she wrapped directing Scandal (Episode 308) last week.

The title of this post came from film writer, TV/documentary/film director & producer, and film marketer & distributor Ava DuVernay. She was the keynote speaker at the 2013 Film Independent Forum, presented by Indiewire, that took place October 25-27 at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) in Los Angeles, CA. If you follow We Connected Productions, LLC (WCP, LLC) you will remember the interview we had with Ava during the pre-Oscar events.

Other memorial quotes from her speech on Sunday, October 27:

  • "Desperation is a repellent, passion is a magnet"
  • "There's a difference between between hungry and passionate & desperate and depressing"
  • "Test if you're wearing [desperation]: you spend more time in your day thinking of what you don't have than working w/ what you do"
  •  "I took off something in 2010 that was inhibiting me...and that was my desperation"
  •  "Trying to get something from someone else is preventing you from DOING."

"The only thing that moves you forward is your work". This quote resonated with Sharee and I. We, like Ava, did not go to film school, but did the work. WCP, LLC wrote, directed, and produced 4 short films which you can view here; produced two local short films and an independent feature film that premiered a few weeks ago in Columbia, SC; produced Gospel Talk, a web content talk show; and documented our international travels to Italy and China. We did the work and was recently approached to produce a regional production. God is aligning WCP, LLC to produce positive images of African-Americans in various media formats. Stay tune.

Women of Destiny True Dreams Business Showcase

On Saturday, May 19, 2012 more than 200 business professionals gathered in Columbia, SC to pitch their business ideas at the WOD True Dreams Business Showcase for an opportunity to win $50,000.  I played it "safe" and with a business plan in hand, pitched the need for a DVD multi-duplicator that will allow us to make multiple copies rather than single duplication of our short film compilation DVD.  This will in turn allow us to sell more copies of our DVDs and help sustain our business.  We will also contract out this service to other persons who maybe in need of multi-duplication of their DVDs.

On Saturday, July 14, 2012 we attended an awards banquet to celebrate the business showcase and to announce the winners.  We are so happy to announce that We Connected Productions, LLC was awarded $1000 towards our business. We were ecstatic to be amongst four other exceptional award winners.  We would like to thank Sharon Holmes and Sally Hammonds for putting this showcase together. In the future we plan to give back to their non-profit organization, as well.  "It's not enough to reach a goal, it's about making dreams come true"...Sharon Holmes

Take A Leap

We Connected Productions, LLC has a new venture in store entitled Take A Leap. Yes, we are still an independent filmmaker/videography company. However, we will be taking a break from producing other filmmakers projects from November 2012 to Spring 2013 to create our own content. Cameras are very inexpensive now, and audiences are hungry for new online content.  In fact, Sharee and I watch most of our TV shows online, even the ones broadcast on basic Network TV.  We Connected Productions, LLC desires to reach out to an American audience that is eager to learn about various countries cultures. We particularly want to explore the steady surge of African-Americans choosing to live abroad, such as the following:
  • A childhood friend from Aiken, SC was the first of my friends to move out of the country. She has been living in South Korea for at least 3yrs now.
  • A former client moved to China last year. She returns to the US this upcoming June.
  • A classmate from my MBA program moved to Shanghai, China in October 2011. He does not plan to return to the US permanently.

We Connected Productions, LLC will follow these stories among many others out there to see how they live and work. Take A Leap will film the pilot (first) and second episodes in November 2012 when we travel to Rome & Florence, Italy. We have a few interviews already lined up. We also tentatively have a trip planned to China to interview my MBA classmate during our two week work hiatus in December 2012/January 2013. It has yet to be confirmed.

Unlike episodic TV, webisodes will be no longer than 7 or 8 min. We need you to watch the show once we place it on YouTube. We need at least half a million viewers within the first few weeks of it being online in early 2013. We want to show Networks such as BET, HGTV, Travel Channel, and others we are targeting for acquisition of an entire season of a half-hour show concept, that there is an audience who desires to see how African-American expats live and work. And just as important, how they can to.  Take a look at this promo video from our 2009 travel to Rome & Florence, Italy; French Riviera(Cannes, Nice, Monaco).
