Marketing Workshop Sponsored by SC Film Commission

Jennifer Warren from NYC facilitated a workshop on the current state of marketing in the indie film industry.
  • Reminder that the film business is a business. There is a product and an audience.
  • Research: boxofficemojo.com or the-numbers.com
  • A business plan must include financing, budgeting, and a marketing analysis.
  • Devise a marketing plan to include target market, distribution strategy, strategic alliances, and competitive analysis.
  • New distribution strategy includes online, digital on demand (DOD), DVD distribution, video on demand (VOD), theatrical, and direct sale.
  • Promotional strategies included publicity, advertising, and online promotion such as social networking, website marketing, and blogs.
  • Three case studies were provided that utilized the technology Skype in which we were able to interact LIVE through a Q&A session with the filmmaker or producer.
  • Some key words learned:
             "Transmedia" (workbookproject.com)
             "Niche"
             "Crowdsourcing" (indiegogo.com and kickstarter.com)
             "1000 true fans" (fandata.com)
             "Find your sneezers"
  • Michael Hennessy, the DP for Paranoid, informed everyone at the seminar of the AugustFilm.com group. They meet the third Tuesdays of each month near North Augusta, SC. The social hour begins at 6:30pm and meeting at 7:00pm. Each member has his/her own project. The group does not make movies.
  • Michael also introduced a new charter film group in Columbia. We Connected Productions and Moving Forward Pictures will be instrumental in starting the group. We will meet the first Tuesdays in each month at Books-A-Million at Forest Drive. The social hour begins at 6:30pm and meeting at 7:00pm. The Columbia group will have the same Mission Statement and By-Laws as the Augusta Film Group. Membership is free to film talent and crew.
  • A special note:  April's meeting will be on April 13
  • New connections were made with talent, crew, and strategic partners that would help us expand We Connected Productions company goals.
